FAQ for Digital Purchases

The New Press and Glassboxx

What is the Academic Reader?

The Academic Reader is the eBook reader app, available on iOS, Android, and as a browser-based reader. We use technology designed by our eCommerce partner Glassboxx to deliver our digital titles from our website directly to readers via the Academic Reader app.

What is Glassboxx

Glassboxx is an eCommerce company with a service for publishers and retailers to efficiently sell and deliver eBooks to readers.

As our eCommerce partner, Glassboxx have worked with us to build the The New Press website and the reader apps which they continue to operate. They also provide merchant services to us, so you may see the name Glassboxx appear throughout your purchase journey on email communication or in some cases on your bank statement.

I bought a book from The New Press. But what is the Glassboxx app?

The Glassboxx service is also used by many other publishers and retailers, and controls the delivery of eBooks to end customers within their own branded apps, or through the ‘Glassboxx’ app. You will only need the Academic Reader app to access books purchased from The New Press Website.

I’ve got a new phone or tablet. How do I transfer my books to it?

Just download the Academic Reader app from the app store onto your new phone or tablet, log in with the email address used when you bought your books, and you’ll find them ready and waiting in MY BOOKS.

What eBook formats can be purchased?

The Academic Reader app works with ePubs and PDFs.

Please note that ePUBs are our most accessible format, in most cases. With ePUBs, you can enjoy lots of annotation functionality including highlighting, adding bookmarks, and taking notes. With ePUBs you also can customise visual elements including changing the font, font size, line spacing, background colour, and more. ePUBs are more accessible than PDFs in the browser reader.

PDFs are files with fixed layout, and this often limits how much you can add notes or highlights. This may also be the case with fixed format ePUBs.

Can I give or share my book with somebody else?

No, digital books on the Academic Reader app cannot be copied, shared or printed. This is to protect the rights of The New Press and our authors.

Can I print or copy my book?

No, the books on the Academic Reader app are copy protected, so cannot be copied, printed or sent to someone else.

My device is using an older operating system. Will that be a problem?

Once the operating system (Android or iOS) nears end of life (this is usually 3 years from OS release date), manufacturers stop releasing device and operating system updates, and that might mean our app may not work as expected on your device.

If you experience an 009 error code when downloading a book, this is probably because you are using an older operating system. To resolve this please update your device to the latest version of the operating system. If the problem still persists after you have upgraded, then please contact us at arhelp@glassboxx.com.

I have a book on the Glassboxx app already. Can I read that on the Academic Reader app?

No, you can only read books from The New Press website on the Academic Reader app.

If you’re having problems logging in to the app, for example, you see the message ‘Email address not recognized’) make sure the email address you’re entering on the login screen is the email address used when making your purchase from The New Press website. This may be different to the one you are using for your app store account.

Once you’ve entered the correct email address, Academic Reader sends an email with a verification code to your email address. Copy/paste the verification code from the email into the verification screen in the app and tap VERIFY ME. You’ll then be taken to the MY BOOKS screen.

The email from The New Press has the subject ‘Your Academic Reader verification code’. You might need to check your Spam folder to see the verification email.

After entering your email address on the login screen, we send the verification code to the email address you entered. The email from Glassboxx Academic Help has the subject ‘Your Academic Reader verification code’. Simply copy/paste the code from the email into the verification screen, and then you can start using the app and reading your book.

Where is my verification code?

You need a verification code to log into the Academic Reader app. This is sent as an email to the email address you enter on the login screen. It normally takes less than a minute to be sent by our system, but it can be delayed by your email service.

If you don’t see the verification email after a couple of minutes, please check your spam and junk mail folders.

You can also request a new verification code from the app, but please kindly note that only the most recent verification code will be valid.

If your eBook doesn’t appear to be downloading, firstly please make sure your device is connected to the internet by wifi, 4G/5G or a hard wired connection.
