NICOLE HOLLANDER
April 25, 1939–April 23, 2026
The New Press is deeply saddened to note the passing of cartoonist Nicole Hollander, creator of the syndicated feminist comic strip Sylvia.
The Sylvia comic strip ran for more than three decades, appearing in major newspapers like the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times and prominent alternative publications like the Village Voice. The comic strip followed the incomparable and irascible Sylvia, a cat-loving freelance writer. Hollander channeled her acerbic wit and razor-sharp sensibilities into Sylvia, creating a Chicago original whose hilarious take on American life won over millions of loyal readers.
The New Press is proud to have published The Sylvia Chronicles: 30 Years of Graphic Misbehavior from Reagan to Obama, which included a foreword by Julies Feiffer. The Sylvia Chronicles collected the best of the comic strip to present Sylvia’s singular take on contemporary politics, from the early days of Reagan to the latter days of Palin, and tackling the often-overlooked absurdities of daily life along the way.
Read obituaries in the New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times, and The Daily Cartoonist.
